The Sense of Entitlement in America
86Frivolous and Questionable Lawsuits
I have noticed the sense of entitlement in America has really gained momentum in recent years. Apparently people have come to believe there is always someone else to blame in every unfortunate situation and that an outrageous compensation must be paid. Oddly enough, it appears the courts agree.
Some examples:
1. Only in America can you spill a cup of coffee and be awarded a million bucks for burning yourself. Honestly – Should we have the right to sue anyone for what we do with a product we purchased even when the product was as described? Should we have the right to sue a sports car manufacturer for selling a fast car we crashed? Doesn’t a consumer have any responsibility for their actions?
2. A man fell through a skylight in California school while committing theft and vandalism. He sued for damages…and was compensated! Injured Burglar Sues Honestly I thought crime wasn’t supposed to pay!
Fortunately not every frivolous case is rewarded, like the judge who filed a suit for $67,000,000.00 against the drycleaners who lost his pants. Judge Sues for over $65 million on Lost Pants Personally I still find it disturbing that a judge could even file such a case.
Far too many of these law suits clog the courts making it difficult for a legitimate cases to be tried. Far too often people are trading their common sense and responsibility in an effort to make someone else pay. When will it cease and desist?
Felon on Infomercial
Being an insomniac watching television in the wee hours of the morning has truly been an eye opener. One infomercial in particular not only claims I am entitled to free money from the government, but that there is also a conspiracy to keep it from me. The spiel goes on to promote a book that will help me get my fair share if I buy his book. Is he for real?
Let’s think about this in real common sense terms.
First off, this “author” and I use the term loosely, has a rather colorful past including numerous large fines and has served prison time for false advertising, credit card fraud and larceny. He has been successfully prosecuted for misrepresenting himself for claiming to cure health issues. Why would I believe he has suddenly discovered I am due money especially from the government? Why would I believe he could know with such certainty or that he would even care? Why would anyone believe a convicted felon on such matters?
Let’s apply some common sense shall we?
The infomercial is attempting to present a few ideas as facts. First, he would like you to believe the government has conspired to keep you from what you deserve. Then he wants to convince you that his book will give you the knowledge to get your funds held hostage. It could just get your dander up. Slow down and think about that for just a moment. Do you really think the government has money it is supposed to give you but will only do so if you say the magic words? We may balk about our taxation, but I doubt the infomercial is correct in its presentation. He just wants to sell his book and get your money. Besides, do you seriously believe the government is sitting on all that cash while the national deficit is so out of control?

Now as much as I admire the guy’s determination and creativity to sell his book, I am more furious he has stooped to manipulate a sense of entitlement in so many people. If he is so smart to have “discovered” the conspiracy then wouldn’t you think he could realize the national deficit means the government is not flush but dangerously high in debt? There is no money in the coffer, but suppose there was.
Frivolous Grants and Such
Through out the past several years we have all heard rumors of government grant money being used for ridiculous studies. Seems to me popular rumors were of funds granted to study the sex life of lady bugs, to finance someone making art of a burned flag or a desecrated crucifix, or worse. Hopefully these have just been rumors, but what if indeed funds had been allocated for these kinds of things?
That train of thought would cause me to be quite angry. We have hungry and homeless people in this country. There are veterans who need help. We have masses that are ill and uninsured. As long as we have yet to find a cure for cancer, diabetes and other diseases, we cannot be casual about money. I am ashamed to think the government would grant or that anyone could even ask for money for foolish things while so many are in desperate need. If it is been done it needs to be stopped. Now.
Common Sense Must Rise Again
For the spell to be broken and the sense of entitlement to be derailed we must draw the line and take a stand. Having the right to sue does not always make it right. We can refuse to buy a book. We can decide to take responsibility for our own actions. We can replace it with common sense. The sense of entitlement is only helpful to some lawyers and those who don’t want to be responsible for themselves. In any case, The first step is to admit there is a problem.

It's embeded into our young. They teach it in schools now. Just ask those who stood in line in Chicago for Obama money. Great Hub!
WTF? The judge wanted 65 MILLION because the dry cleaners lost his pants? For goodness sake. A judge's pants are hidden under a ROBE! But that's just the tip of the iceberg.
You could write a part II, III, and on and on with these ridiculous lawsuits.
Unfortunately, the precedent has been set and people see other people getting these rewards and their eyes see dollar signs.
I, too, loved this hub. Well done! MM
You can thank Lawyers and the American Bar Association for this Insanity !
This sense of entitlement is not only in the USA, but also Canada... in a slightly different sense. Here, I this sense of entitlement comes from people believing the government and/or philanthropic social programs (ie: food banks)owe them. Rather, they don't just owe these people... they owe them more than anyone else. I've worked in a food bank, and a few times I've seen some single person get crabby because they should recieve as much food as the family of 4 does. Go figure. People are always looking for someone else to blame their lives and emotional state on.
Good hub, btw. Well said.
I honestly think that the crazy lawsuits began in earnest when they allowed lawyers to advertise in mass media. 20 or so years ago, lawyers were not allowed to advertise on TV. Remember?
But sometimes the so called silly grants make some sense if you read more about them. I remember when everyone was up in arms about grants to study wildflowers. What with the devastation of our natural world, such a study makes sense. Plus, the growing of wild flowers created jobs when they started using them in the florist industry.
It is a sad fact that the term 'personal responsibility' is almost defunct. I don't know how businesses can function in this world where they always have to look out for someone wanting to sue them. I wish that the government would encourage a work ethic rather than entitlement. Nothing gets accomplished on a sense of entitlement. Thanks for the great hub!
as you said.. only in America!
I think it may happen to some extent in the UK too... not sure. We have odd things printed on food packets thats only purpose seems to be to protect the manufacturers from court cases. Examples are packets of peanuts on sale that say caution this product contains nuts; and warnings on products that you put in the microwave to heat up... that they will be hot when removed from the microwave. Well at least it makes me smile when I read them in the supermarket.
You are so right and it is so sad. It takes traveling to a third world country to realize how true it is. We lived away from America for 15 years while I raised my children and they were very unspoiled - most appreciative at that time. I see a bit different attitude in the next generation. A few have been able to pass on what they learned. Thanks and aloha!
Holly, This is *GREAT* Well-written and clear thinking. Finally some relief for those 'Is it just me?' moments!
Very nice. You are so right.
Very well done. Clearly presented & well written. Loved the "let's apply some common sense shall we?" Probably not any time soon. :>)
Somewhere along the line sole responsibilty for one's life became eroded by opportunists who would make you believe that you have been bamboozled for years and need to stand up and get your due! Great hub! :-)
that coffee incident always annoyed me. she was driving and wearing shorts, so she puts the HOT COFFEE between her legs to hold it, and guess what, it spilled! so they gave her a truckload of money and revised their coffee temperature in response to an ill choice a person makes. the proliferaton of warning labels on every single item you purchase these days is because of people like that. *tsk*
great hub!
I found this an interesting read. Thank you for sharing and expressing yourself. :)
Excellent hub - we live in a society where being stupid is rewarded. However I disagree with this being a entitlement mentality. I see it more as capitalism in its purest form.
I surely agree with you. Your insights are keen and this article is well done. I enjoyed it.
Thanks for the article! I prefer to think of it as our "inalienable right to a stroke of luck".
Great hub. The world is upsidedown now and just doesn't make sense. I try to keep my faith in Jesus Christ because nothing else makes sense.
The low-down on the coffee in the loin case. McDonalds was winning in the case, when the lawyers for Mcdonald started to get heavy-handed with the plaintiff. And it all turned against the burger company.
Great hub, Holly! One of the first hubs I wrote was about a large billboard that enraged me that said "Who Can I Sue?" Sounds like we think alike! Thanks for "having my back" over there in the forums!
Hi h.a Borchich,
Some companies and individuals deserve to be sued but the litigious mind-set has spoilt alot of things here in Australia too. For example, we no longer have some of our country fairs and festivals because the price of public liability insurance is just too high. Everyone's too frightened of getting sued.
Not so long ago a light plane crashed into a house in Victoria which is shocking but occupants from the unharmed houses in the surrounding streets all clamoured to get compensation for the *shock*.The attitude used to be 'God that was terrible'..now it's 'god that was terrible...what can we get for it?'
So I think you are right...the sense of entitlement has ballooned out of proportion.
The whole thing is tantamount to playing the high stakes version of "The BlameGame" and it's the perfect place for those who look for a reason to fail but jump at ficticious lures of success. They standing at a crossroads most of the time and are not unlike a drowning person reaching for the life preserver that isn't there. They neglect to mention it was them who caused them to be neck deep in shark infested waters in the first place.

Grants to study the sex life of Ladybugs. That's priceless. Great hub. Really great hub. You should come to the political forum room sometime. You're views are right on target. Nice work.
